here to help

By now, the impact of this global pandemic is being felt by every single person in our community. A sudden and dangerous virus has turned our whole lives upside down. From job losses and business closures to an unstable, uncertain economic future, the gravity of the situation is not lost on anyone.

It’s times like these where humanity is tested. All around us, people are going out of their way to step up and show up for their friends, neighbors, service workers and strangers in need. In big ways and in small, we are witnessing compassion in action.

In this climate of isolation, finding ways to support your community is a great way to feel connected again. We are not alone in this. Healthcare workers, local businesses, service workers, and our most vulnerable populations all need our help. Our brokers and staff at milehimodern have shared various ways they’re contributing.

We are here to help.

how to contribute in denver

pay it forward

Numerous restaurants, breweries, salons and retailers are offering gift cards for purchase and special curbside deals during this shutdown. Gift cards are more than just something to look forward to. They help small businesses survive during the mandatory closures. Consider purchasing a gift card for yourself, a friend who needs a pick-me-up or community members in need.

And while you may not be able to dine out, you can still support your neighborhood restaurants by enjoying some takeout from the comfort of your couch. (Check out #coloradocurbside on social to find restaurants still open for delivery or curbside service.)

pick up a pen pal

Our elderly populations are especially vulnerable and isolated during this time. Picking up a pen pal can be a great way to shower a nursing home with love and foster a feeling of connection. Some of our brokers at milehimodern have been working with the organization Wish of a Lifetime. Their team is organizing a group of volunteers to start a phone tree or letter tree to connect with seniors during this time. Anyone interested in volunteering can email volunteer@wishofalifetime.org.

support our medical heroes

Healthcare workers on the front lines are working longer, harder shifts, leaving them with little or no time for meals, trips to the store, or even just time to go home. Sending coffee and food from a local restaurant to the hospital staff is a great way to not only fuel our doctors and nurses but to also support Denver restaurants. Feeding Colorado Heroes is accepting donations to put towards local restaurants preparing meals for hospital workers across the ER, ICU and dedicated COVID-19 wings.

give blood

There is an urgent need for blood donations as the strain increases in our healthcare systems. If you are healthy and eligible, consider donating blood as a vital way to give back. Most blood donation operations have taken “social distancing” measures to ensure their visitors are safe and their facilities are sanitary. Find out more from the Red Cross or Vitalant websites to make an appointment and help save lives.

uplift our kids

The grim reality is that too many of our young kids rely on school-provided meals as their primary source of food. School closures have severely impacted these students’ access to this resource, so that’s where volunteer organizations step in. Food for Thought Denver makes meals for students year-round, so families that don’t have enough to eat can pick up meals at various Denver Public Schools locations. Volunteers are continuing these efforts despite COVID-19, and you can help out through donations or volunteering your time.

donate materials + supplies

Time and money are valuable, but so are resources. If you have unopened items like food, medical supplies, or other necessary goods, there are volunteer organizations out there to make sure your donation goes to the right place. Explore the Denver Department of Health and Environment resource page on how to help out.

feed the frontlines

Boulder non-profit organization Feed the Frontlines has teamed up with Boulder restaurants Salt, Big Red F Restaurant Group, Kitchen Next Door, Japango, Blackbelly, Santo and Community Kitchen Table to provide meals to medical providers at Boulder Community Health. All proceeds go to the restaurants’ staff, so this is a great way to support local businesses and our healthcare heroes at the same time.

rally resources

The Daily Camera has compiled a list of Boulder County non-profits in need of supplies and financial support. From disinfectant cleaners to non-perishable food donations, there are endless ways to help on the Front Range.
