Santa Fe Arts District
A Family Affair – Sandra Carson has been a long standing gallerist owner in the Santa Fe Arts district and had an opportunity to develop a parcel of land behind her gallery – two options kept coming up – a much needed parking lot or an artistic approach to housing.
Enter Mitchell Carson – Sandra’s architect grandson. Mitchell grew up with art and Sandra’s influence was instrumental in Mitchell’s love for design, art and thought. A modern abode won over the parking lot option!
The small lot presented challenges, however, Mitchell saw opportunity. Taking into account the amount of natural light desired and the tight footprint of the lot, Mitchell started with two rectangles and began to rotate them and shave off to accommodate the site. This led to the roof being an extrusion of the hallway and the ability to push interior elements to the outside. For example, the kitchen/appliances and stairs are outside the form.
To create a sense of belonging to the architectural fabric of the neighborhood Mitchell chose sawtooth shingles for the roof – nodding to its historic past.
Inside Mitchell embraced the neighboring brick wall by intentionally adding windows that looked directly at it. Upstairs the placement of strategic clerestory windows wash walls as you walk the private areas of the house.
